Muscle man Tomas Bures has won Mr Universe, the competition which launched the career of Arnold Schwarzenegger. Tomas Bures is just under 1.8 m tall but weighs 105 kilos, none of it fat. The Prague kulturista (bodybuilder) is pure, enormous, almost cartoon-like muscle. Bures works as a moulder in a Prague iron foundry, pumping up his enormous biceps, triceps and tree-trunk thighs in a small gym located in a Prague 4 primary school every evening.

All that pumping paid off for the 31-year-old bodybuilder at the weekend, when he surprised many by winning the amateur category in the Mr Universe finals in the English town of Southport. Bures said never in his wildest dreams could he have imagined such a sensational success.

Tomas Bures, He almost didn't make the finals, after getting into a fight on the street six weeks ago and injuring one of his biceps. But, says Bures, that setback may have helped him take the crown - as he had to focus on getting in shape quickly on the eve of the event. In the past he has been involved in a drug-taking controversy: he was handed a three-month ban last year for not making himself available for testing. No drug tests are carried out during the finals of Mr Universe. That of course is the competition which launched the career of the Austrian-born actor Arnold Schwarzennger, back in 1967; Arnie later won the professional category three times. Tomas Bures - the first ever Czech Mr Universe - says he doesn't plan to turn pro and is already back at work at the foundry, and the gym.

Bodybuilding Competition Preparations

Cutting and bulking - The general strategy adopted by most present-day competitive bodybuilders is to make muscle gains for most of the year (known as the "off-season") and approximately 12–14 weeks from competition attempt to lose body fat (referred to as "cutting") while minimizing the loss of muscle mass. Generally this involves reducing calorie intake and increasing aerobic exercise while monitoring body fat percentage. The precise effectiveness of the cutting and bulking strategy is unknown, with only limited observational case studies on the subject. No studies involving precise hypercaloric feeding combined with resistance exercise have been conducted.

Many non-competitive bodybuilders choose not to adopt this strategy, as it often results in significant unwanted fat gain during the "bulking" phase (particularly for those who do not use anabolic steroids). While competitive bodybuilders focus their efforts to achieve a peak appearance during a brief "competition season", most ordinary people prefer to maintain an attractive physique year-round. Anecdotal evidence suggests that a proper training program combined with a modestly hypercaloric diet with proper macronutrient balance can produce steady gains in size and strength, while avoiding significant increases in body fat.

Pre-competition - In the week leading up to a contest, bodybuilders may decrease their consumption of water, sodium and carbohydrates, the former two to alter how water is retained by the body and the latter to reduce glycogen in the muscle. The day before the show, water is removed from the diet, and diuretics may be introduced, while carbohydrate loading to increase the size of the muscles through replenishment of their glycogen. The goal is to maximize leanness and increase the visibility of veins. The appearance of veins are further enhanced immediately before appearing on stage by darkening the skin through tanning products, applying oils to the skin to increase shine and some competitors will eat sugar-rich foods to increase the visibility of their veins. A final step is the use of weights to fill the muscles with blood and further increase their size.

Balanced Muscles Build the Perfect Body

If you want a perfect, injury-free body the trick is to stop choosing sides. Researchers at Ball State University in Indianapolis report that the majority of weight lifters train one leg harder than the other. Given most people naturally lead with one side of their body more than the other, this is hardly mind-blowing news. What's not often realised is that training one side stronger than the other makes for unequal weight distribution, lop-sided muscle tone and significantly increased risk to injury.

Many physios agree, adding that a strength imbalance between two opposing muscle groups can also limit speed development. Many offer muscle balance testing to compare the strength of opposing muscle groups - important not only for injury prevention but to guarantee maximum speed of muscle contraction and relaxation.

When you're training, the main two muscle types activated are mobilisers and stabilisers.

Mobilisers are found close to the body's surface and tend to cross two joints.Typically they're made up of fast twitch fibres that produce power but lack endurance. With time and use, they tend to tighten and shorten. Mobilisers assist rapid or ballistic movement and produce high force.

Stabilisers on the other hand, are situated deeper within, only cross one joint and are made up of slow twitch fibres for endurance. They tend to become weak and long with time. Functionally the stabilisers assist postural holding and work against gravity.

Although these opposing muscle groups work together, over time mobilisers can inhibit the action of stabilisers and begin moving in an attempt to stabilise on their own.
